NA For Change recognizes the critical role that superintendents play in addressing issues of racism and other forms of prejudice. We have consistently made the case to both the North Allegheny administration and School Board of the need for a North Allegheny superintendent with an express commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
On October 28, 2020, the North Allegheny School Board voted to approve Dr. Melissa Friez to the position of Superintendent of Schools effective July 1, 2021, and to the position of Deputy Superintendent effective November 1, 2020.
NA For Change congratulates Dr. Friez and celebrates this outcome. Since this summer, she has consistently been an ally to our cause by demonstrating a genuine commitment to empowering students, amplifying their voices, and creating an inclusive school environment. Her attention to our Addendum to Letter to North Allegheny and her ability to quickly materialize a coalition of administrators to discuss these issues impressed us.
We are confident that through her work, she will continue to place issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the forefront of our district’s consciousness. We look forward to seeing how her promotion will benefit the North Allegheny community in innumerable ways as we continue our relationship and work towards progress. We commend the North Allegheny School Board on their decision and hope similar ones will follow.
